I remember growing up at St. George in Piscataway, New Jersey. It is a part of me and shall always be. My grandmother came over in the early part of the 20th century, as did many greeks. She taught us to be proud. I lived with her for the first 27 years of my life, and she taught me that God should be respected, faith should be treasured, and love should be for all!! The Orthodox Church provides that to all of us!
It is vital that the greek community always embrace all parishoners, regardless of wealth or status. All too often, I have found that people thought that greeks were unyielding and stubborn. No doubt culturally, we have much to be proud of, but I have always found love and devotion in our community, and commitment beyond comparison. My father was a convert to the greek orthodox church 60 years ago. He taught sunday school for nearly thirty years and served on the board for many years also, even as PRESIDENT!!! Not bad for a convert! My parents friends and fellow greeks in the community built and raised St. George to a wonderful community that has served hundreds of the faithful. These people ARE the community! And if they were to be "shut out", would constitute a tremendous loss and and serious breach of our faith.
I am concerned that intervention by the Metropolis of New Jersey in our community will exclude the very people who have built St. George into the fine community it is today. All too often, parishoners *****ume all is fine, and leave the board and other authorities to rule without oversight. That has to change. We need to encourage more participation and also more devotion to the Church!!!
